Pertussis HAN for Dayton – Montgomery County (Figure 1) 

  • Also a mild Pertussis outbreak recently at UC

Marburg Update – Level 3 Travel Alert to Rwanda

  • CDC Health Alert for any U.S.-based healthcare personnel who were present in a healthcare facility in Rwanda in the previous 21 days.
  • Individuals who have been present in a healthcare facility (including outpatient settings or traditional healers) in Rwanda, should be excluded from work duties in a U.S. healthcare facility until 21 days after their last presence in a healthcare facility in Rwanda.
  • Sponsoring organizations are asked to contact state health departments prior to return to the U.S.
  • Returning travelers, conduct risk assessments, exclude from clinical or non-clinical work in U.S. healthcare facilities for 21 days, and perform daily monitoring.
  • CDC and the Department of Homeland Security will begin public health entry screening at certain U.S. airports for people coming from the Republic of Rwanda.

Baxter Plant Updates – “Critical National Shortage of IV Fluids”

  • The majority of hospital facilities use Baxter as their primary IV Fluid brand
  • IV fluid days on hand is mixed – many reporting 4-7, some less than 3 days
  • Bridge in place, power restored to building, plan to reopen next week, 25 staff still unaccounted
  • Baxter changing allocation for some IV solution supplies from 40% to 60% of normal levels as they anticipate deliveries from foreign plants.
  • Baxter expects to be at 70% by the end of October and 90% to 100% by the end of the year.
  • Other makers of products that compete with Baxter’s — ICU Medical Inc., Fresenius Kabi AG and B Braun SE (in path of Hurricane Milton)
  • All systems implementing evidence-based fluid management protocols to reduce IV fluid usage and waste. Many of these initiatives would be done whether a shortage existed or not.

Ohio Board of Pharmacy Action

  • As FDA seeks solutions at the national level, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy is using its enforcement discretion to help Ohio healthcare facilities source IV solutions and other impacted drugs during this potentially challenging time. Today, the Board issued the following resolution:
  • Resolution: Purchase of IV and Peritoneal Dialysis Solutions from Unlicensed Out-of-State Facilities.
  • Effective Oct 9, the Board issued a resolution allowing the sale and shipment of IV and peritoneal dialysis solutions and related non-controlled dangerous drugs by unlicensed, out-of-state facilities.
